After graduating from college for nearly 4 years now, I finally received my diploma in the mail the other day. As I looked at the piece of paper I worked so hard for, I remembered some of the things I learned in College.
I specifically remembered a Management course where we were working on an activity to identify traits of a bad manager. Now, I have a few years under my belt in the professional world, I have realized that I have dealt with a lot of different managers.
Some good, some bad and some okay, none who were terrible people by any means. So, I am going to take some time today to identify some key traits of a good managers.
- Good manager will be open and honest with you. I am not saying they will tell you everything including things you don’t need to know. I am saying they will tell you all the information you need to continue doing your job and perform at an optimal level. If they have some critical piece of information or some constructive praise, they wont be shy about relaying that information over to you.
- Good Managers will set you up to succeed. This ties into giving you all of the information you need to do your job well.
- Good Managers will be understanding and not micro-managing. They wont care about the extra hour you are taking for the doctors appointment or the 10 extra minutes you took for lunch. They will see the results and trust you are an adult who can get your job done. They will not ask you to be copied in every email communication you have with other managers.
- I have noticed that the manager that I differentiate Good from Bad are the people I look up to. These are the types of people I want to be when I grow up. If you manager doesn’t inspire that in you, you might be working for a bad or an okay manager.
These are some traits that I put in good managers, of course there are other traits like Patience, empathy, active listening and more that also go into a good manager.
